RESUMO

Globally, we are seeing a rise in non-communicable diseases such as obesity, hypertension, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, chronic respiratory diseases, cancer, etc., due to stressful lifestyle in this competitive world. Most of the non-communicable diseases are associated with lifestyle behavior. Presently, the role of lifestyle medicine is very critical and important in the management of chronic lifestyle-associated disorders. Considering the above facts, we decided to review the literature to gain a deeper insight into the implications of lifestyle medicine in medical practice. A literature search was conducted on PubMed, Scopus and Google Scholar databases. We observed that lifestyle medicine intervention is a growing and newer discipline and is being employed along with conventional management of non-communicable diseases by medical practitioners today, as they are strongly associated with lifestyle behaviors and practices. Motivation for change in lifestyle is challenging because it depends on the patient's determination and eagerness to adapt and accommodate to the newer lifestyle pattern. The medical practitioners should spend time in coaching patients on lifestyle-related health education. Guidance and coaching by medical practitioners will help patients adapt to practices of maintaining regular physical activity, a balanced diet, good sleep hygiene, and avoid addictions of tobacco and alcohol as part of life. Introducing real and progressive evidence-based behavioral changes to reduce the risks of lifestyle-related acute and chronic diseases in medical practice will reduce the burden of non-communicable disease.

INTRODUCTION: Tile setters in construction industries are exposed to a potent risk of silicosis as they are constantly exposed to crystalline silica dust during concrete finishing, cutting and fixing of the ceramic tiles. The noise produced by instruments used in tile settings may lead to noise-induced hearing loss. Noise above the permissible limit of 85 dB may lead to autonomic changes and alteration in blood pressure. These facts gave us an impetus to evaluate the pulmonary functions, blood pressure and hearing deterioration in tile setters and correlate these parameters for their present functional status with duration of exposure to tile cutting profession. METHODS: The pulmonary functions were evaluated with spirometer, autonomic status by recording the blood pressure and hearing loss by calculating the Hearing Deterioration Index (HDI) for hearing loss. RESULTS: There was significant decline in forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume 1 sec (FEV1) and forced expiratory volume 1% (FEV1%) in tile setters. The decline in FVC, FEV1 and FEV1% was significantly higher in subjects with exposure of more than five years. There was increased systolic and diastolic blood pressure in those having more than five years of exposure in the tile setting profession as compared to less than five years. There was a positive correlation between years of service in the tile setting profession as well as sound exposure level with HDI and blood pressure in our subjects. CONCLUSION: Prolonged exposure to the tile setting profession may lead to compromised lung function, hypertension and hearing deterioration in tile setters.

Immune cells play a key role in host defence against infection and cancer. Unlike infection, cancer is a multidimensional disease where cancer cells require continuous activation of certain pathways to sustain their growth and survival. The tumour milieu plays an important role in defining the metabolic reprogramming to support this growth and evasion from the immune system. Cancer and stromal cells modulate each other's metabolism during cancer progression or regression. The mechanism related to change in the metabolism and its role in the crosstalk between tumour and immune cells is still an area of immense importance. Current treatment modalities can be immensely complemented and benefited by targeting the immuno-oncology metabolism, that can improve patient prognosis. This emerging aspect of immune-oncology metabolism is reviewed here, discussing therapeutic possibilities within various metabolic pathways and their effect on immune and cancer cell metabolism.

BACKGROUND: Fructosamine (FA) has gained importance as a new biomarker for hyperglycemia in the past decade and may be of indispensable use in certain conditions where hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) falls short of utility such as disorders of red blood cells, patients with rapid glycemic excursions requiring more short-term monitoring, pregnancy, chronic kidney disease, etc. Methods: The present study was a hospital-based observational cross-sectional study conducted in the Department of Biochemistry, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Nagpur, India. Serum HbA1c, FA, albumin-corrected fructosamine (AlbF), total protein-corrected FA (PrF), hemoglobin (Hb), and hematocrit (Hct) were estimated in 32 controls (Group I) and 32 cases of diabetes mellitus (DM) (Group II). The clinical data and lab results were presented as mean±SD/±standard error (SE) of the mean. Student's t-test and ANOVA were used to compare various parameters between the groups. Pearson correlation analysis was performed to assess the correlation between different diagnostic parameters. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was plotted to assess the diagnostic significance and cut-off value for FA, AlbF, and PrF. RESULTS: The controls and cases were matched for age and gender distribution. Serum HbA1c (p<0.0001), serum FA (p<0.0001), fasting blood sugar (p=0.001), postprandial blood sugar (p<0.0001), random blood sugar (p=0.001), hematocrit (p=0.002), AlbF (p<0.0001), and PrF (p<0.0001) were found to be significantly higher in known diabetic subjects compared to controls. The case group was further subdivided into pre-diabetic and diabetic groups. On correlation analysis of HbA1c with various parameters, a moderate correlation of HbA1c was noted with FA (r=0.522, p<0.0001) and AlbF (r=0.375, p=0.002) in all subjects. Additionally, a moderate correlation of FA (r=0.479, p=0.033), AlbF (r=0.444, p=0.050), and PrF (r=0.441, p=0.065) with HbA1c was also found in subjects with diabetic range glycemia. No such correlation was noted in the pre-diabetic group. No significant correlation was noted between FA and its corrected values in any range of glycemia. None of the parameters assessing glycemia were found to be significantly affected by hemoglobin status. On ROC curve analysis, HbA1c was found to be the best parameter (area under the curve (AUC) =83%, p<0.0001) followed by AlbF (AUC= 80.5%, p<0.0001) and uncorrected FA (AUC=80.5%, p<0.0001) to diagnose DM. CONCLUSION: Serum FA should be considered a valid diagnostic biomarker and of indispensable use in special populations where HbA1c falls short of utility such as patients with red blood cell disorders or those showing rapid glycemic excursions such as those on corticosteroid therapy or insulin therapy, etc. It exhibits additional advantages over HbA1c with respect to lower reagent cost and easy automation on any conventional laboratory instruments based on simple colorimetry.

COVID-19 emerged in Wuhan, China, but was caused by the original coronavirus, severe acute respiratory syndrome associated coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV2). In early 2020, there was a widespread breakout of cases well over world, resulting in an epidemic that rapidly escalated to become a pandemic. This abruptly shook the global healthcare system. The emergence of the alpha, beta, and delta SARS-CoV-2 were associated with new waves of infections, sometimes across the entire world but until this month i.e., between Nov-Dec, 2021, Delta variant reigned supreme until the emergence of a newer variant i.e., Omicron (B.1.1.529) of SARS-CoV-2. Delta had 13 mutations. Of these, nine are in the spike protein, the protrusion on the surface of the virus that helps it latch onto human cells. Specifically, two are in a molecular hook, called the "receptor-binding domain". Omicron, a creation caused by monstrous mutations. At least 32 mutations are in the spike protein and 10 in the receptor-binding domain. was designated a COVID-19 variant of concern (VoC) by the World Health Organization (WHO) on 26th November 2021. Structurally, the omicron variant has shown too mutated at antibody binding sites which would leverage them for escaping the possible immune response by the body. We don't yet know much about the other alterations and how they might affect the virus's behavior. Omicron COVID-19 strain after identifying individuals with symptoms that were not the same as those seen in the Delta form. People with night sweats have also been reported. The new omicron variant has more mutations than the prevailing rampant delta virus. This makes the newer variant more transmissible, better able to evade itself from various vaccines readily available in the current scenario. These overall increases in the percentage changes in a single day cases of COVID-19 reported cases can be attributed to the beginning of third wave or can be speculated as newer surge of omicron variant cases. Yet another new variant has been detected in France with 46 mutations and 37 deletions in its genetic code, many affecting the spike protein. 'B.1.640.2' is the current nomenclature for this variation.

BACKGROUND: Learning helps acquire knowledge or skills. COVID-19 outbreak severely affected the progress of education all across the globe. Pandemic-induced alternative methods of teaching promoted the progress of online education. Hence, this study is undertaken to assess an overview of teaching learning strategies in the COVID-19 pandemic so as to explore the direction of medical education and help perk up the teaching learning methods in medical education. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The cross-sectional study involves first year medical undergraduate students of 2020-2021 batch studying at Dr.VMGMC, Solapur. It involves complete enumeration of students of 2020-2021 batch. Due to the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic hematology, classes were continued and completed by the same faculty by online live teaching using Microsoft teams. As this being an online survey, it was ethically exempted. A comparison of questionnaires between offline and online classes was done by using χ2test and a P value less than 0.05 was considered as significant. Quantitative data generated by the dichotomous question and five-point Likert scale questions were analyzed using descriptive statistics and frequency analysis. Out of 189 respondents, majority of students preferred traditional offline classes over online classes. Self-directed learning was feasible in both methods of teaching. DISCUSSION: Traditional offline classes were more interactive and enthusiastic than online classes. Offline classes helped students to revise, recollect, and reproduce necessary information as their attention span was better in offline teaching than online teaching. CONCLUSION: Holistic understanding and better learning were experienced through traditional offline classes. Although teachers take double efforts for online teaching, the overall learning effect and impact of traditional offline classes were much better than online classes. It definitely motivates andrgaogy and helps understand the concept on their own.

Introduction The cycle threshold (Ct) value in real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) serves as a criterion to diagnose coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and is inversely proportional to viral load. Levels of inflammatory markers such as aspartate aminotransferase (AST), ferritin, D-dimer, high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) are used as quantitative measures of COVID-19 severity. We examined the association between these markers and Ct values. Methodology This retrospective data analysis included 400 patients with positive RT-PCR results for COVID-19 who were admitted to a tertiary care hospital. Clinical and biochemical data were accessed from the hospital information management system. Associations of clinical parameters and markers of disease severity (e.g., polymorph, AST, hs-CRP, D-dimer, LDH, and ferritin levels) with Ct values were assessed. Observations LDH, ferritin, D-dimer, and hs-CRP were found to be significantly higher in moderate and severe groups than in the mild COVID-19 group. AST, ferritin, and hs-CRP levels were also significantly higher in severe COVID-19 subjects, compared to moderate COVID-19 subjects. Ct values for the E (envelop) gene and ORF (open reading frame) 1b gene were found to be significantly higher in those with severe COVID-19. Polymorph counts in subjects with Ct values of 25 or higher were significantly increased, compared to those with Ct values under 30. LDH, D-dimer, and hs-CRP levels in subjects with Ct values over 30 were significantly lower than for those with Ct values under 30. Ferritin was the best independent predictor of non-survival in study subjects, with an area under the curve (AUC) of 85.5% (95% confidence interval = 73.2-95.9). The Ct value for the E gene had an AUC of 75.1%, and the ORF1b gene had an AUC of 64.5%. However, no significant correlation was detected between any parameter and Ct value. Conclusion Polymorph, LDH, ferritin, D-dimer, and hs-CRP levels were significantly elevated in subjects with low E gene Ct values. Also, these subjects were at risk of severe disease and fatality. Ct values for the E gene thus could serve as an early indicator for patients at risk of severe disease and death.

Background Ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) is looked upon as a newer marker of myocardial ischemia. There is a paucity of literature however with regard to studies correlating levels of IMA in patients with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. The present study therefore aimed at estimating the levels of IMA in patients with gestational hypertension and assessing its utility in predicting hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. Methods The present study was a hospital-based case-control study conducted in the Department of Biochemistry, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Nagpur. IMA was estimated in 30 controls (Group I) and 20 cases of gestational hypertension (Group II) using a spectrophotometric assay detecting free unbound Cobalt left behind. The clinical data and lab results were presented as mean ± SD. Student's t-test was applied and Pearson's correlation coefficient was calculated. A value of p < 0.05 was taken as statistically significant. The ROC (Receiver Operator Characteristic) curve was used to establish the cut-off of serum IMA levels in pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH). Results There was no significant difference in age and period of gestation (POG) at the time of sample collection between the groups. There was a significant difference in the systolic and diastolic blood pressures (BPs) of both groups. The mean level of serum IMA was significantly higher in cases of gestational hypertension (0.88 ± 0.14 absorbance units {ABSU}) as compared to controls (0.69 ± 0.08 ABSU) (p<0.001). On correlation analysis, the systolic and diastolic BPs were found to be highly positively correlated with serum IMA levels (p<0.001). ROC curve analysis suggested that at a cut-off of 0.73 ABSU, IMA has 85% sensitivity and 80% specificity for predicting gestational hypertension. Conclusion Statistically significant results of serum IMA levels obtained in gestational hypertension which falls on the lesser severe spectrum of the disease imply that serum IMA can be used for early diagnosis of gestational hypertension and impending Pre-eclampsia (PE) and Eclampsia.

Many studies conducted after the pandemic period revealed that, while COVID-19 primarily injured the lungs, it also affects other organs in the form of cardiovascular complications, metabolic derangements, renal damage, and so on. Although we know that inflammatory cascades, complement activation, and pro-inflammatory cytokines are all involved in vasculitic processes that cause organ damage, we do not know the exact mechanism of complications such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), cardiovascular ischemia, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary thromboembolism, and brain injuries (embolism) that are frequently observed in COVID 19. The currently available biomarkers do not predict the severity of the aforementioned complications. As a result, more specific biomarkers such as serum calcium binding protein (S100B), glial fibrillary acid protein (GFAP), myelin basic protein (MBP), neuron-specific enolase (NSE), hs-TNI, (highly sensitive cardiac troponin) - HBDH, (Hydroxybutyrate Dehydrogenase), CK-MB (creatine kinase myocardial band), ST2 (suppression of tumorigenicity 2) are in need for early detection & improved clinical outcome.

HIV with coexisting Hepatitis C infection has been a global health problem. HIV with Hepatitis C prevalence is significantly higher in people living with HIV. These patients being immunocompromised are at higher risk of contracting COVID-19 infection. Super added COVID-19 infection may prove to be fatal in these patients. We decided to review literature for assessing the clinical manifestations and management of these patients contracting COVID-19 infection and explore the public health measures in practice in the current scenario. Practices of safety norms against COVID-19 shall prevent associated health morbidity and mortality. Moreover, management of these patients needs to be judiciously done by Physicians as COVID-19 infection may worsen their condition. The Public Health Specialist are playing a crucial role in management of COVID-19 pandemic especially by strategy planning for surveillance, health education and preparedness for any future wave of COVID-19 infection.

Background: Cytological smear and cell block are commonly used to diagnose pleural fluid effusion. However, there is a paucity of information in the literature where a comparison between a cytological smear and a cell block with corresponding pleural biopsy has been done. This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of cytological smears, cell blocks, and pleural biopsy for the diagnosis of malignant tumors. Material and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, analysis of successive pleural fluid samples received by the department was done. The sample was divided into equal halves of 5 ml each. One was used for conventional smear and the second was used for the preparation of cell block. The cell block was prepared by centrifuging the specimen of fluid at 2500 rpm for 15 min. A pleural biopsy was obtained by using Cope's pleural biopsy needle. Results: A total of n = 50 cases were included in the study. A total of n = 8 cases were diagnosed as malignant by cell smear and n = 4 cases were suspicious for malignancy. By cell block, n = 10 cases of malignancy were diagnosed and n = 1 case was suspicious for malignancy. By biopsy, n = 11 cases were diagnosed as malignant and n = 1 case was suspicious for malignancy. Out of the total, n = 2 cases were diagnosed as squamous cell carcinoma by biopsy; one case was diagnosed by cell block; and the other was reported as suspicious for malignancy. Conclusion: The study shows that cell blocks are complementary to the cell smear technique in over diagnosis and categorization of benign as well as malignant cells. The cell blocks were more useful in the diagnosis of malignancy because of better preserved architectural patterns as seen in corresponding histopathology sections. It, therefore, appears that the cell blocks are a perfect fit to bridge the cytology and histopathology.

COVID-19 was caused by the original coronavirus, severe acute respiratory syndrome associated coronavirus-2 (SARS CoV2), which originated in Wuhan, China. COVID-19 had a large breakout of cases in early 2020, resulting in an epidemic that turned into a pandemic. This quickly enveloped the global healthcare system. The principal testing method for COVID-19 detection, according to the WHO, is reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Isolation of patients, quarantine, masking, social distancing, sanitizer use, and complete lockdown were all vital health-care procedures for everyone. With the 'new normal' and vaccination programmes, the number of cases and recovered patients began to rise months later. The easing of restrictions during the plateau phase resulted in a rebound of instances, which hit the people with more ferocity and vengeance towards the start of April 2021. Coronaviruses have evolved to cause respiratory, enteric, hepatic, and neurologic diseases, resulting in a wide range of diseases and symptoms such as fever, cough, myalgia or fatigue, shortness of breath, muscle ache, headache, sore throat, rhinorrhea, hemoptysis, chest pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, anosmia, and ageusia. Coronavirus infections can be mild, moderate, or severe in intensity. COVID-19 pulmonary dysfunction includes lung edoema, ground-glass opacities, surfactant depletion, and alveolar collapse. Patients who presented with gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms such as anorexia, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea had a higher risk of negative outcomes. COVID-19's influence on cognitive function is one of COVID-19's long-term effects. More clinical situations need to be reviewed by healthcare professionals so that an appropriate management protocol may be developed to reduce morbidity and death in future coming third/fourth wave cases.

COVID 19 is an infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome corona virus 2. Thromboembolism has been a characteristic manifestation in most of the severely ill COVID-19 patients. Thromboembolism in COVID 19 infection is attributed to injury to the vascular endothelial cell, hypercoagulability and blood stasis. The hypercoagulable state of blood and thrombophilic diseases leads to hypercoagulability. COVID 19 infected patients with pre-existing hypercoagulable disorders have higher risk of developing thrombosis and thromboembolism and such thrombotic episodes may prove to be severely morbid in these patients. As immune-prophylaxis COVID 19 vaccines are being administered to the public. The known side effects of the COVID 19 vaccine are mild to moderate and include fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, headache, fatigue, myalgia, malaise, pain and swelling at injection site and diarrhea. Thrombosis with thrombocytopenia has been noted as a rare side effect of COVID 19 vaccine. Such side effect of COVID 19 vaccine in patients of hypercoagulable disorder may prove to be fatal. The health care workers should be cautious and judicious in managing such patients. A detailed lab profile for coagulable state of blood should be carried out in all patients COVID 19 infected patients with pre-existing hypercoagulability diseases. The patients should also be health educated regarding side effects of vaccine especially with those indicating thrombosis and they should be warranted to receive immediate medical care in case of any side effects or complications. Paucity of literature gave us an impetus to review management profile in patients of hypercoagulable disorders.

Covid-19 pandemic has been a very serious cause of health concern worldwide. Thrombosis has been a critical manifestation in severe Covid-19 infection. The increased arterial and venous thrombosis in patients with Covid-19 is proving to be life threatening. Sticky platelet syndrome and sickle cell disease are genetic disorders with procoagulant nature of the disease, while in Glanzmann syndrome there is an enhanced bleeding tendency, with pathological defect leading to altered platelet aggregation and delayed clot formation. Considering the thrombotic episodes of Covid-19, we decided to review the literature on data bases such as PubMed and Medline for knowing the coagulant status in genetically associated diseases such as sticky platelet syndrome, sickle cell disease and Glanzmann syndrome. We planned to review various published studies with the aim to find whether the coagulant profiles in these conditions alter the thrombotic manifestations and prognosis if these patients contract Covid-19. Various research studies revealed that patients with sticky platelet syndrome develop arterial and venous thrombosis, while those with sickle cell disease are known to develop complications such as deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. Moreover, patients with Glanzmann syndrome who usually have a bleeding tendency also rarely present with severe venous and arterial thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. Patients with sticky platelet syndrome and sickle cell disease and,, occasionally those with Glanzmann syndrome have a higher risk for thrombosis if infected with Covid-19. More studies are needed to better understand the clinical manifestations and designing standard management protocol for patients with sticky platelet syndrome, sickle cell disease and Glanzmann syndrome who contract Covid-19 infections.

Lockdown was implemented throughout the world in March 2020 to control the spread of covid-19 infection. It affected the mental health of people in various ways. This web-based cross-sectional survey was conducted in the general population of India with an aim to evaluate the mental health of the healthy individuals in the later stage of the lockdown period. Data on socio-demographic factors, anxiety, depression (HADS scale), perceived stress (PSS scale), insomnia (insomnia severity index), subjective psychological feeling of well-being (WHO-5 well-being Index), and attitude towards covid-19 (7-point Likert scale) was collected. Univariate regression analysis and Karl Pearson's correlation were used to analyze the correlation of mental health abnormalities with socio-demographic factors. 119 subjects of mean age of 36.03 ± 18.04 years took part in the study. Their average number of days of stay at home during the lockdown and the average number of days of the lifestyle changes was 49.07 ± 31.92 and 61.39 ± 20.03 days, respectively. Depression, anxiety, stress, and clinical insomnia due to covid-19 were reported in 13.45%, 10.92%, 14.29%, and 11.76% subjects, respectively. There was a significant correlation of depression, anxiety, stress, and WHO-5 well-being score with age, socio-economic status, and the average number of days of the change in lifestyle due to the COVID-19 pandemic (P < 0.05). Therefore, the study concluded that the abnormalities of mental health were less prevalent in the older age group and lower socioeconomic status in the later phase of lockdown.

OBJECTIVES: Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders, diagnosis of which is challenging as many unrelated conditions may mimic seizure. Epilepsy impairs the quality of life of patients due to associated physical and psychological trauma. Epileptic patients are also at increased risk of premature death due to autonomic disturbance and fatal accidents. The aim of the present research work was to study ischemia modified albumin (IMA) as an early biomarker of epilepsy in the adolescent population. METHODS: Twenty-five diagnosed cases of epilepsy and 25 healthy volunteers as control of adolescent group were recruited as study subjects. The study subjects were age and sex matched. Clinical evaluation, routine biochemical parameters and IMA estimation were carried out. Serum IMA was measured by spectrophotometric method. RESULTS: The mean serum IMA levels were significantly raised in epileptic patients (0.69 ± 0.1 absorbance units [ABSU]) as compared to the healthy control group (0.52 ± 0.24 ABSU) (p=0.004). ROC curve of IMA predicted that at cut off of 0.59 ABSU, the IMA has 96% sensitivity and 52% specificity for diagnosing epilepsy. CONCLUSIONS: IMA may be used as a biomarker for early diagnosis of epilepsy as well as to differentiate epileptic seizure from various non epileptic disorders in the adolescent population.

Diabetes mellitus is a non-infectious disease and has affected about 425 million adults globally and nearly 15.9 million of them reside in Africa. Moreover, the prevalence of undiagnosed diabetes mellitus is very high in Africa and approximates to around 62%. Nearly 75% of the total deaths due to diabetes are in individuals lesser than 60 years of age. The multifaceted disease of diabetes mellitus produces chronic complications such as, neuropathy, nephropathy, retinopathy, microangiopathy etc. These patients of diabetes mellitus are more susceptible to infections due to compromised immune system. Hence these patients of diabetes mellitus and undiagnosed diabetes mellitus are at greater risk of contracting COVID-19 infections. The dual impact of pathophysiology of COVID-19 infections in diabetes mellitus may increase morbidity and mortality in these patients. Hence there is need of health awareness in diabetics as well in the high-risk group for diabetes such as persons with hypertension and obesity. The scarcity of health resources, shortage of trained medical personnel and disease burden of infectious and non-infectious diseases has laid a heavy impact on the economy in Africa and this has been further strained due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The practice of preventive measures by the risk group of Undiagnosed Diabetes Mellitus patients will prevent them from getting infected by COVID-19 and at the same time decrease mortality rates and hence the undiscovered group that is the patients of undiagnosed diabetes mellitus needs to be vigilant regarding safe preventive practices.

Sickle cell disease is a major concern of public health significance in Africa. Nearly 2/3rd of the global burden of sickle cell disease (SCD) is found to be in sub-Saharan Africa. There is increased mortality risk in sickle cell disease patients in Africa due to associated complications such as acute chest syndrome, asthma, pulmonary emboli and sepsis. Sickle cell disease management is the major contributor of financial burden on the government. Moreover, there is a shortage of medical specialists in Africa. COVID-19 pandemic has further led to devastating impact on economy and health globally. The chances of SCD patient contracting COVID-19 infections are higher as these patients are immunocompromised and may be at a higher risk of mortality. Practicing preventive measures including isolation and social distancing by these patients will prevent mortality rates as well as economic burden on government in the present unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic.
